  1. Oh, that looks painful! I kind of want to ask her if it’s worth it though. My best friend has some tattoos (none are of the “permanent cosmetics” variety) and her skin always has to heal afterwords. That;s gotta be weird if it does that to your eyelids, so I kind of wish I could ask this lady how it went after. Does anyone out there have that kind of info?

I have been doing permanent eyeliner since 1987 and only ever had one client ask me to stop before we got started. The eyelid takes the topical anesthetic well and clients find it perhaps annoying but quite tolerable. Everyone has different levels of sensation so while some may say it tickles others comment more that it is a feeling of vibration. The secret is in the technique used by the person doing the service. The skin must be held taunt and there is an art and science with the use of the device. Normally there is minimal redness and it feels as if you have been crying. Anytime you create a wound on the skin whether it is nicks from shaving your legs or the minor wound from permanent cosmetics there is a healing process. Normally the skin looks back to normal in less than one week although redness or irritation is usually gone in a day. Large body art can certainly take longer than this to resolve depending on the client’s skin and the area where the tattoo is placed.
Other factors that can affect sensation are the width of the eyeliner – the wider the liner desired, the more discomfort, the health of the client, quality of the skin, and individual sensitivities. Oh and Keely, I use a Nouveau Contour device :) and as you know those irritate the skin less than many other techniques.
